In January, 25 Indigenous communities will participate in a football championship.

From 25 January to 5 February, the Indigenous Embassy of Ucayali will host the Copa Embajada Indígena Ucayali Perúin Pucallpa, a football championship bringing together men, women, and youth from 25 Indigenous nations. Among the participating peoples are the Asháninka, Awajún, Cocama, Cashinahua, Shipibo-Konibo, and many others.
Football holds significant cultural and social importance among the Indigenous peoples of the Amazon and serves as a key point of connection across generations. The sport functions as an instrument of resilience in the face of social challenges and promotes both physical and mental well-being. In particular, among young people, it is an important tool for preventing addiction and strengthening community cohesion.
The tournament is conceived as a major intercultural event and represents a contemporary evolution of the traditional Ani Xeati celebrations. Cultural expression will be highlighted through traditional dances and exhibition matches. In addition, the event will provide a space for Indigenous leaders to engage in dialogue with the Ambassador on key topics such as the defense of Indigenous territories, rainforest protection, the strengthening of Indigenous rights, and youth support programs.
The championship aims to unite Indigenous nations, preserve cultural identity, foster solidarity, and open new perspectives for cooperation, while also creating an atmosphere of celebration and shared joy.
